In Queso Emergency

Lay's Southwestern Queso

This one isn't bad. It initially tastes like a cross between "sour cream and onion" and cheddar, but there's an afterburn that builds up and gives you a strong queso dip flavor ... about five minutes after you stop eating them.

I'm waffling over this one

Lay's Chicken & Waffles

The taste of these was disturbingly accurate. It had a strong flavor of both fried chicken and waffle, along with a touch of maple syrup. I could even taste the pat of butter. Unfortunately, as with the Cappucino chips from way back, slightly sweet potato chips just don't work for me.

Pretty Gouda

Lay's Smoked Gouda & Chive

The smoked gouda flavor was subtle, but on the whole this one wasn't at all bad. If they put these into regular production I suppose they'd be hard to distinguish from the run-of-the-mill cheese and onion chips.

Brazilian Steak House Chips?

Lay's Brazilian Picanha

I don't think I've ever had the dish this one was based on, but the chip flavor isn't bad. That being said, none of this year's flavors so far have been as good as the Lay's Reuben chips from last year.

Tikka Tikka Tikka!

Lay's Kettle Cooked Indian Tikka Masala

These did indeed taste like chicken tikka masala, though more like the kind you get in the food court of a shopping mall rather than from a good restaurant.

At least it's not chop suey

Lay's Chinese Szechuan Chicken

Ok, these were strange ... not bad, but still not quite good. The first couple of bites did indeed taste like a spicy chicken dish from a cheap Chinese take-out place. After a few bites though the flavor kind of faded away and all that was left was just ... spicy.

Sub-Prime

Kroger Prime Rib & Horseradish

They had a good concept here, but they skimped on the flavor. I really couldn't taste either the beef or the horseradish. What I was left with was a chip with a slightly odd taste.

... and nowhere to go

Ruffles All Dressed

I wasn't sure what to expect with this flavor. They pretty much turned out to be barbecue flavored. Maybe a bit too sweet.

Wikipedia says that "All-Dressed" is "... a potato chip flavour popular in Canada. The flavour combines the potato chip flavors of barbecue, sour cream and onion, ketchup, and salt and vinegar."

The subtlety was completely lost on me.

Do the Truffle Shuffle!

Lay's Wavy West Coast Truffle Fries

This was the last of Lay's strange flavors available at the local grocery. These had a strong taste that I assume is what truffle fries taste like. Maybe it would help if I'd ever actually had truffle fries, but I thought they were just so-so.

That Which Cannot Be Pronounced Correctly

Lay's Kettle Cooked Greektown Gyro

These were probably my least favorite of Lay's strange flavors so far (not counting the Cappuccino ones - those were just plain wrong). The "greek spices" taste was a bit too strong and there wasn't much of a flavor of gyro meat.
